Beyond the Classroom: The Truth About Dr. Vikas Divyakirti and His IAS Journey

Mention the words “UPSC,” “civil services,” or “Mukherjee Nagar” anywhere in India, and one name almost invariably comes up: Dr. Vikas Divyakirti.

To millions of aspirants preparing for the grueling Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations, he is more than just an educator—he is a guiding light, a philosopher, and a pop-culture icon (cemented further by his cameo appearance in the hit biographical drama 12th Fail).

Because of his deep mastery over civil services topics, his face plastered across educational thumbnails, and his title as the founder of Drishti IAS, a common question frequently pops up: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is: No, he is not currently an IAS officer, nor did he serve as one. However, his relationship with India’s civil services is uniquely fascinating, involving a successful attempt at the exam, a brief stint in government service, and a bold choice to walk away to build an empire of education.

The 1996 Triumph: Clearing the UPSC Exam

To understand Dr. Divyakirti’s background, you have to look back to 1996. At just 23 years of age, he appeared for the prestigious Civil Services Examination for the very first time.

Competing against hundreds of thousands of candidates, he successfully cleared all three stages of the exam (Prelims, Mains, and Interview) on his first attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

With an AIR of 384, he qualified for the civil services and was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) rather than the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) or Indian Police Service (IPS). Under this allocation, he served as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.

Why He Walked Away After a Few Months

For most people, clearing the UPSC exam on the first try and securing a central government job is the ultimate career peak. But for Vikas Divyakirti, the deskbound reality of bureaucratic life didn’t match his inner calling.

After working in the Ministry of Home Affairs for just a few months (roughly four months), he made a decision that shocked his peers and family: he resigned.

Driven by a profound passion for teaching, literature, and social discourse, he realized that while an individual officer could influence policy within a specific department, an educator could empower hundreds of future leaders who would ultimately shape the nation. He chose the classroom over the file cabinet.

The Birth of Drishti IAS

Following his resignation, Dr. Divyakirti returned to academia. He pursued rigorous higher education, earning multiple degrees—including an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature from the University of Delhi—alongside qualifications in sociology, law, and mass communication.
